DRAM "Internet of Things" Jinjiang in "Accelerated Speed"
Experts proposed a great amount of beneficial advices for the future development of Jinhua Program.
www.ijjnews.com July 17 Yesterday in the International Integrated Circuit Industry Development Summit Forum, five senior experts of semiconductor and IC field such as Zhang Xing, President of Software and Microelectronics Faculty of Beijing University, John K. Kibarian, President and CEO of US PDF Solutions, Kazutoshi Wakabayashi, R&D Director of Japan NEC and Doctor of engineering of Tokyo University, Zhu Huilong, Chief Scientist of Integrated Circuit Forefront Craft Research and Development Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences Microelectronics Institute and Expert of "Thousand Talents Program", made a high-end dialog about "development tendency of DRAM technologies" and come up with advices on Fujian Jinhua DRAM Integrated Circuit Production Line Program (hereinafter referred as "Jinhua Program"). The high-end dialog was held by Yang Qing, Professor of US University of Rhode Island and President of the board of Shenzhen Dapu Microelectronics Science and Technology Limited Company.
Build Jinjiang into a State DRAM Base
Yang Qing: What studies do you experts have in integrated circuit industry? Could you please use practical experience to talk about what the future tendency of DRAM technologies look like? What opportunities and challenge Jinhua Program will meet?
Zhang Xing: DRAM technology occupies great value in the integrated circuit industry chain and developed in a fast speed over the past few years. Despite of traditional technology, new ones are rising. I hope that can help build Jinjiang into a national DRAM base or center, which will important to promote the development of integrated circuit industry in China. Of course, if Jinjiang can be one of the DRAM technology centers in China in the future, relevant research and development and reserve of new technologies is required because memory is not enough.
Chen Shanzhi: Where is the larger market room for DRAM in the future? Actually DRAM will have a promising future in application like mobile entertainment consumption. Mobiles will be a large potential consumer market for DRAM because there are many entertainments needing memory in cars. Besides, AR and VR will also need chips of DRAM.
Today is the era of everything connecting to each other. The knot of future Internet of things will need DRAM chip which are needed in a greater amount. Now we have a target "a million links in one square km", so that there will be more knots of memory, which means we will have more knots in sensor and internet of things. As a result, whether Jinhua Program is a low-consumption studying internet of things or a consumer chip is a question requiring consideration. We need to decide our future technology path and product direction according to the China's practical market.
Kazutoshi Wakabayashi: As for the future prospection of DRAM, it needs to increase the storage on one hand and the accumulating capability and server on the other hand. Firstly, many end points of the whole internet need DRAM and the internet fee is decreasing, which requires a great amount of better server accessories. Secondly is the speed server. DRAM can gain more storage through new technologies.
Establish microelectronics talents training and research and development institution
Yang Qing: What should be focused on in the beginning of Jinhua Program? Could you talk about in terms of system how can we develop faster and succeed in such a competitive market?
Zhang Xing: For Jinjiang, technology is the weakness and technology lies in human. I think technological resource of Jinhua Program needs not only high-end talents, but, for the sound and continued development of Jinjiang DRAM course, to establish microelectronics talents training and research and development institution.
As Jinhua Program advances, if there is no research and development institution or education institution to support the development of Jinjiang's industry chain, the sustainable development might be effected. Actually foundation exists in microelectronics talents training, such as in Xiamen University, Fuzhou University and Huaqiao University in Fujian area. It will promote Jinjiang's DRAM course provided we can introduce teachers of Fujian's or others' universities to form a platform in Jinjiang to provide conditions for experts and scholars to train talents or conduct research and development. Besides, when we have the platform, teachers and excellent students of Beijing University can cooperate with research and development of projects with people in Jinjiang's platform or start talents training. We can also devote in Jinjiang through the work.
John K.Kibarian: I think the development of DRAM technologies will meet opportunities and challenges. For a producer, the manufacturing of a chip is a learning process and it needs "accelerated speed" to learn. You must have a fast closed loop to capture key information and determining the accuracy of the information, like an engineer who needs to master extensive and rich information. He not only needs to understand information about the device and electronic engineering but the equipment and production.
Zhu Huilong: I think, during the development, Jinhua Program needs to value independent intellectual property. Independent intellectual property plays an important role in integrated circuit field and is profitable. Take cellphones as an example, 20% to 30% of the price are patent fee. We all know that one side of the smile curve is market service and the other is research and development. They are the most profitable. But the middle one assembly line of manufacturing earns less money. In that, we need to think about the profit issue happening in 5 or 10 years. I think patent is an important tool. As such, Jinhua Program needs to work out patent issue. If we do not undertake it now, we may earn less money.
Establish talents exchange platform of traditional industries and integrated circuit industry.
Yang Qing: In Quanzhou and Jinjiang, famous industries are shoes, textile and garment, and the shoe and clothes industries are developing in a fast speed. In recent years, smart wearable products, one of the shoe and clothes industries, developed fast and became a hot issue. What conditions do you think should meet for technologies to promote the coordinated development between integrated circuit industry and shoe and clothes industry?
Chen Shanzhi: Jinjiang's textile and garment and shoes product occupy a large part in the market, while smart wearable products are a spot, so that they are something integrated circuit industry and Jinjiang's present industries can integrate. In this aspect, the era of everything connecting with each other will require numerous smart equipment as the development goes. I think the low-consumption of DRAM is a right direction in the future.
Zhu Huilong: Jinjiang has developed traditional industries. I think we can build a platform to convene people from shoe industry and integrated circuit industry because the so-called invention or creation is to connect two things which do not show relations. You have mastered great knowledge of shoes, so you must find experts who know about integrated circuit to convene and let talents of traditional industries and integrated circuit industry to exchange ideas, discuss the problem. That is generally how creation made.
